An old town

Richmond's roots go back to 1822, when settlers built Fort Bend, and it was incorporated in 1837 by the Republic of Texas. It had 1,273 residents in 1920 and 5,777 in 1970, and passed 11,000 by 2000. So, by our reading, Richmond has a wider spread of house ages than its newer neighbors, including some much older homes.

Soil

Most of Richmond lies on the southwest side of the Brazos. The Handbook of Texas describes the Brazos valley's soils as rich alluvium, different from the prairie clays elsewhere in the county. The USDA Web Soil Survey shows the soil for any address.
